It is clear the author of this book knows what he is talking about, having described every species from the order Carnivora of mammals living in Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua. It is also clear that the illustrator of this book is very talented, and having compared the black and white (although very good quality) illustrations with photographs from other books I can honestly say they are life-like to the finest whisker-line. A unique quality of this book is the first-person accounts of encounters with the carnivorous creatures in its pages, either the author or the illustrator will tell you a short tale about each animal which they have experienced first hand. I found it useful for biological reference of species such as the relatively well-known jaguar, ocelot, coyote and skunk, and the rarer species like the oncilla (or tiger cat), jaguarundi, grison and small-eared zorro. A good buy, if not for the illustrations, or the informative text, then the amusing and entertaining anecdotes that go with it.
