This is a nicely written book discussing the elements and their correspondences, with each chapter focused upon a specific element the book goes into some depth on various topics whilst glossing over some of the more interesting ideas the writer brings up (the eighth Chakra for example). Anyone considering buying this book specifically for elemental based spells should look elsewhere seeing as the section on magic in each elemental chapter is pretty sparse. Having said that, there are some very creative ideas presented here and what little there are of them are well worth adapting. The most useful information comes in the form of the correspondences and the folklore tidbits, as well as the stories of the Gods and Goddesses associated with each particular element. The book appears to be well researched and offers a slightly more in depth look at the elements than most other more 'general books' of same do. At any rate it makes for a good place to start in terms of studying the elements.
The first chapter deals with helping a person to acknowledge which element they are to align themselves with, or which one they have the most affinity with. I've always known mine was Air but the meditations presented in this book helped me to expand upon that. All the element based chapters start with a lengthy description of an Earth/Air/Fire/Water Witch and I found the chapter describing an Air Witches personality to be very accurate. The book also taught me a lot of things I didn't know before! Which is exactly what one wants to get from a book after all. As with most books there were things that I didn't agree with. Most notably the writers individualistic choice of using corresponding seasons which deviated from those more traditionally accepted in relation to the elements. Therefore, while this book is very useful and I found it to be worth buying one has to be selective with the information presented.

Good Beginners Guide on the Elements

The practice of the Witch relies on sources of energy for the workings. A good witch can draw upon the elemental energies for her use and knows the properties well and how to use them best.
Ms. Sullivan's book examines closely the properties of each of the four elements and gives a good rounded education in their history, associations and applications.
The book is broken down into each element and then breaks it own further into the path of each element, the magics and then Deity associations. There is lore, spells, recipes and herbal and stone associations.
What is nice about this book is that is does offer information on all four elements, and gives the beginning practitioner a well rounded education. And while you may find you have a preference for one or two elements, this book will give you a good look at working with all four.
This is a nice book, easy to read and understand and provides the basics for anyone looking at the practice of witchcraft using the four elements as focus. boudica
