Well written - lacking a committed narrative

There is no doubt, the author writes beautifully. The premise was good and it started well, however, my interest started to slip in the Middle East. I skipped on to Nepal, which I thoroughly enjoyed and Sri Lanka was interesting. However, the chapter on Goenka in India? Perhaps this should have been saved for another book. I missed it's significance to honey hunting. I appreciate that this is a travelogue but I felt that idea of 'searching for honey' was a slightly tenuous attempt to stick it all together, excuse the pun.

I loved this book. Not only is it an account of a journey in search of traditional methods of bee-keeping which are fast dying out, its also a spiritual journey for the author. The descriptions are eloquent and the book is a beautiful reflection on life. Since reading it I have also taken more of an interest in the honey that I buy!

This is one of the few books that I actually decided to purchase, having read it first. Usually I borrow books from the library and am contented with that. It is a wonderful book about the author's travels to countries where he can view at first-hand what bee-keeping and the pursuit of honey is all about. His travels take him to meet bee keepers and honey farmers in exotic countries such as Nepal, India and Sri Lanka; the Middle East and Syria, and to Italy and New York. He describes the natural habitat of such places in a beautiful and picturesque way and at every step of his travels he takes the reader with him in his search for honey and sweetness. The story is not very long. One of the best I've read this year.
