How many travellogues offer the meaning of life as a one-line throwaway?
Is it a travellogue? Is it a history of religion? Or is it an inspirational book in itself? Roberts' Journey of the Magi is all three and a great read too. Most obviously it's a great insight into possible readings of early Christianity and its interlinkages with Zoroastrianism and Judaeism all wrapped up in a gently amusing road-trip through Iran with an ever-hungry, far-from-spiritual minder. But as the well-paced narative progresses and the historical magi shimmer towards the glowingly metaphorical, so the book's message shifts quietly in parallel to one of spiritual reflection. Whether that Susa sufi bookshop-keeper ever existed or not becomes less important than the character's role of sharing a few deeper messages, without making it too obvious. After all, all Sufi messages need at least a double reading. Fabulous.
