I read and used this book as part of my English Language degree. It is the first textbook that I have actually read from cover to cover. It is informative, clearly written, easy to understand and very interesting. You can actually visualise what they are trying to convey, which helps a great deal. Whether you are studying or not, this book is a must have for anyone who is interested in knowing about the history and development of the English language.

Solid introduction into the English Language

Starts from the very origins of the English language and goes through to our current perceptions of 'good' and 'bad' English. Although initially designed for the Open Univeristy the course book is clear, concise and very informative for anyone with an interest in this subject.
