Intermediate Russian is a grammar and workbook in one for those who have studied Russian for some time already, or those who wish to refresh their memory & increase their fluency of this great language. Divided into 18 clear units, it offers numerous exercises and, not unimportant, their key. The book itself isn't too big and the units are concise and well structured (each about 12 pages long), allowing you to use it both in the comfortable setting of your study as well as (like in my case) a dentist's waiting room or parking lot. Especially useful are the many dialogues, giving the reader plenty of modern day Russian, something other text books often lack. Solid in the use of verb aspects, adverbs and nouns, it also devotes considerable time & space to often less obvious topics like punctuation, word order and has an interesting section on the declension of numerals (always tricky). On the downside, some of the exercises are a bit repetitive - having made two or three of them makes doing another few a bit boring. What I did miss (as in almost all other workbooks) were examples of 'faux amis' or, better even, examples of common mistakes made by foreigners. I believe this type of book could have been enriched further by showing what not to say, rather than giving examples of correct usage of Russian. Perhaps something for a next issue; Sarah Smyth & John Murray certainly have the potential to write a text book like that. As to Intermediate Russian - I recommend it.
