Cricket fans attribute to themselves a level of literacy and numeracy that they think lacking in the followers of other, lesser games. Certainly the numeracy element is true, since following a game means understanding the score, but literacy? Wisden apart (more numbers than letters, anyway) most cricket books are rotten; ghosted and enervating autobiographies, cringingly awful comic novels and E.W.Swanton (RIP). Hopp's book is a perfect contrast, since aside from a minute introduction and necessary footnotes, he hasn't written it, but studiously collected it instead. The quotes speak for themselves (ha,ha) - Australian spectator: "Tufnell. Can I borrow your brain? I'm building an idiot." or Gooch (?) referring to Warne's first Ashes ball "If had been a cheese roll it never would have got past him." It's not all comedy and there are no Colemanballs - indeed most of the chapters are tightly focused and discuss particular issues/places/teams in the best way of all. If you've a serious interest in international cricket and like reading (the book is satisfyingly large) you won't get a better idea of both its culture and humour than from this book
