A good intuitive introduction to Italian

I recently went to Milano and Parma in Italy and before my journey I learnt the first 32 pages of this book off by heart, and while my Italian was of course horribly broken, I did survive with it. Many of the things in this book were very useful to me. The book is more intuitive than grammatical -- it teaches Italian more in a parrot fashion than by taking the grammar apart and showing how everything works (which I would have preferred - hence only 4 stars), but it's still a very good introduction.

As a new resident of Italy I thought this would help me accelerate the very basic knowledge that I had already picked up. The book breakdown the areas into section dealing with everyday occurances that a traveller may have going to the shop, trains etc. It does this very well while trying to give you a general picture of the country and its customs etc. Some of the advice such as buying goods in some of the small shops and bartering for goods should not be taken so lteraly as any attempt to do this may result in a once happy to help shopkeeper asking you to vacate the premisis.

It gives good examples but without the cassettes it would be pretty unhelpful on pronounciation. I think a phonetic spelling of new words could have been included. I'm luck to be surrounded by Italians who helpme with this all the time. Some of the grammer is also flawed with spellings and words used that only senior citizens would use (so I have been told).

Overall I would recommend this book if you are travelling to Italy and you wish to endulge in expanding on your language skills before arriving but make sure you purchase the cassettes.
