I read Mums on Pregnancy about a month before I was due to give birth after stumbling across it in the local library. I found it to be very interesting and wished I had heard about it earlier as a lot of the content focused on early pregnancy. Even so I couldn't put it down and had read it within an afternoon. I especially enjoyed the chapter aimed at fathers although the hints and tips I gave my DH fell on deaf ears.

An informative and at times very entertaining account of the diverse experiences that motherhood brings. With contributions from witty and incisive women. The best thing about it is that it draws you to the encyclopedia of knowledge that is potentially available at the website to which all the writwrs have contributed. An invaluable resource.

All the advice in this book is taken from the fantastic website www.mumsnet.com. It is an excellent pressie for anyone you know that is expecting and does not have access to the net. The advice may seem to be common sense, but when you have a baby screaming at 3am and you don't know why it is and excellent guide as to what the problem may be.I lent my copy to a friend some time ago as she does not have net access and she has told me that is has been a great source of advice and help to her. I cannot recommend the book or website highly enough.

Until I came across this book, I thought Vicki Iovine was the nearest you could get to a "warts and all" pregnancy guide in book form.
Mumsnet is a deservedly popular and successful UK website for parents with a lively Talk section, and lots of the tips and suggestions in the book first appeared on the website. As most of us still can't access the internet while travelling by bus or tucked up in bed with a pint of Gaviscon, I think the book format is not an optional extra, but an essential.
There is so much here to make you laugh and scurry back to revise your Birth Plan! I also think it's helpful if painful reading to have such an honest chapter on what happens when things go wrong in a pregnancy. This bit is usually left out of other baby books.
Since reading the book I've recommended it to three friends. It's as informative as the best pregnancy magazines and much less patronising.

I was given this book by a friend when I was about eighteen weeks pregnant. It's a sort of 'frequently asked questions' compendium on things that pregnant women fret about, and if nothing else, it shows that we all worry about lots of things. The advice is friendly and personal, and mostly common sense; tips are swapped on how to prevent morning sickness, reassurance is given on eating habits, and most say that if you're really dying for a drink, then the odd glass of wine won't hurt you or your baby. Having said that, reading the book is rather like being surrounded by friends and relations who have had babies and who are terribly keen to share advice, horror stories and useful hints. We all know how incredible boring that can be, but I suppose the advantage the book has is that it can be closed and ignored! Although it has been edited, it has a few irritating chatroom quirks (like people's silly log-on names), but that's my personal taste rather than a serious criticism. If you are a bit isolated, or have few friends or female relations with babies, then the book is cheerful, sensible and reassuring. If you have friends, neighbours or family with babies, you really don't need it.
