the kind of book I've been waiting for

I bought this book in a package of others about teaching, classroom management, education issues etc. It was by far the best. I loved the way it was organised into accessible sections and the easy-going style, but I still learned loads and it was the kind of book you think will be useful for ages, not just for one reading. If you're involved with schools in any way, you should have one of these. It doesn't cover absolutely everything but it does deal with the main things you want to know and it points you in the direction for finding more. And do you know what? I really enjoyed it. I'd thought getting through it might be a chore, but it's a good read.

I got given this book by my mum who thought it was the kind of thing I should be reading (I'm an NQT). And do you know, she was right - for once. I got loads of good ideas from it. I would recommend this to anyone in my position. And don't skip the resources section at the back, because it's really helpful. My only complaint is that it would have been nice to have some pictures.

everything you needed to know in one small package!

Like the author says in his introduction - who has time to wade their way through reams of heavyweight educational studies? But it's the kind of stuff that we need to know - like how to make kids more creative or what to do if you find someone cutting into themselves in the cloakroom. So he's very kindly brought it all together for us, in a user-friendly way. No jargon or DfES speak, just a clear explanation of the main issues and some practical, commonsense advice. What I really liked was the way mainstream subjects like truancy are mixed up with more off-the-wall chapters like how to look after your voice. And because it's all bite-sized you don't get bored.
I've been working in schools for a few years now, and there was still plenty here to keep me interested. But for anyone just starting out in teaching this must be a god-send. I wish it had been around when I was training. This is a great book - it looks nice, it's easy to use and it's stopped me feeling stupid in the staffroom when people start talking about initiatives I've never heard of!
