Fourteen ex England players give their personal accounts of their experiences of playing either in the World Cup Finals or their qualifying matches.
Each player, starting with Sir Tom Finney in the 1950 Finals, has a chapter (of around 15 pages) in which to relieve their glory games. Each story focuses on key matches and the details of which can only be experienced on the field. The introduction to each account includes statistics of the key match in question such as date, stadium, attendance, full team sheets and scorers. But these text book facts tell only part of the story, and it's the player's words which relive those glory moments and made this book so interesting and nostalgic.
The 14 chapters are:
Ivor Broadis 1954 Switzerland Finals
Sir Bobby Robson 1958 Sweden Finals
Jimmy Armfield OBE 1962 Chile Finals
Roger Hunt MBE 1966 England Finals
Brian Labone 1970 Mexico Finals
Norman Hunter 1974 Qualifying
Stan Bowles 1978 Qualifying
Kenny Sansom 1982 Spain Finals
Peter Reid 1986 Mexico Finals
Peter Shilton OBE 1990 Italy Finals
David Platt 1994 Qualifying
Tony Adams MBE 1998 France Finals
Leo Moynihan (author) 2002 Japan/South Korea Finals
The foreword is by Stephanie Moore MBE, Founder of the Booby Moore Fund, and the 32 page photo section provides a nostalgic reminder that there have, despite what many critics may say, been some truly memorable games in England's International history.
