This is an interesting book explaining superstitions that have existed in the British Isles, and where it is possible, Roud has divined their historical origin and quotes plenty of historical examples. Surprisingly a number of well known superstitions often believed to date back hundreds of years, in fact can only be traced back two or three hundred years. A significant number of so-called traditional superstitions actually only date from the Victorian period and there is a great deal of conflict between beliefs on what is lucky or unlucky and these can differ greatly from region to region. It is a little frustrating in that there are so many superstitions for which the origins are unclear. Altogether a fascinating read.
