This book puts emphasis on the "introduction" part. Trying to cover a vast area, where things are continually changing and seem evermore confusing (just trying to make sense of the decision-making procedures in foreign policy, with different procedures and committees, is difficult enough for numerous books having been written about it) is a big challenge, and in that regard the book offers a fine introduction for someone with little former knowledge of some of the issues, and actually, has an excellent bibliography for the one who may want to read more.
However, the book suffers from two problems that make it more annoying for someone with more knowledge of the subject at hand, and in my view makes it a poor book for instance for students. There are small annoying mistakes, for instance the year for the creation of the EuropeAid Cooperation office is stated wrongly.
Furthermore, while still wanting to be an "introduction" the author ventures into some analyses. Although it is clear the author has great knowledge of the subject, these ventures can be nothing but superficial in a book of this type, and in sections such as the one on the relations with the US or the section on terrorism and security, end up more as some personalized pub-discussion, rather than the seemingly non-intended analysis.
The book is a good introduction, but to be read with critical caution and hopefully supplement it with other books on the vast subject of EU foreign policy.
