This text is a must for anyone wanting to build an understanding of post 9/11 America. It does not tackle the subject from a historical or sociological stance as such, but centres analysis on language. Silberstein argues that the language used to respond to the tragedy of 9/11 had a number of serious consequences: it legitimated the 'war on terror'; gave President Bush newfound respect; and (re)created what it is to be an American. Her analysis also deals with ACTA's 'witch hunt' against dissident academics and the drive to educate Americans about Islamic tradition and society.

Her work is at once simple and complex, but always engaging. She sketches a critical and insightful account of the responses to 9/11 within America. However, the work lacks a conclusion. She finishes without drawing her analysis together; without addressing how the strands of her analysis come together. This is a great disappointment: I was left wanting something more.

Nevertheless, read 'War of Words' and connect with refreshing style and insight.
