Very good, clearly written and fairly represented survey.

This is a well-written and thorough treatment of Maurice Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology. As usual, Stephen Priest represents his subject fairly and with an elegance of style that makes this book deceptively easy to read. An excellent introduction.

perhaps a good book for beginners

Stephen Priest, in his own immaculate fashion, here manages to sum up the various arguments that Merleau-Ponty presented throughout his unfortunately short career (at least short for a philosopher, that is!) However, I cannot help but feel that his overly analytic approach to an admirable and still much misunderstood thinker undermines the very facets of his thought for which he should be rightly recognized.

Merleau-Ponty should always be regarded as a thinker in a state of genesis, and it is the potentiality of his thinking that is, here, sadly disregarded...althougth, with respect to Priest, perhaps for the sake of the new reader.
