Up until recently I use to use the Heinemann offerings to teach the C1 and C2 modules. While these were ok and the results obtained were good, they do not come close in comparison to this book that covers both C1 and C2.

The explanations are so much better. More time is taken to explain concepts and there are more worked examples. The format for each chapter is an introductory section stating what you are expected to know. This is followed by a number of sections that include the required theory, worked examples, excercises and open ended investigations. at the end of the chapter there is a review of all the work studied and a concise summary.

The pathetically easy material contained in the first chapter of the Heinemann C1 book has been removed. Instead a CD-ROM is included with the book. This contains a bridging course (pdf) containing elementary material, an e-book (pdf) containing the entire contents of the book and some very useful powerpoint presentations. These materials are excellent and seem to be specifically designed for the teacher. Each pdf page is in fact a double-page spread of a book or bridging course. These could be used in conjunction with an overhead projector or interactive whiteboard. If the teacher wants something interactive, then the powerpoint slides could be used in the same manner. For a student buying the book, they can of course be used at home as well.

All-in-all this represents the best preparation for the C1 and C2 exams. There is incremental development of topics in very easy stages, leading up to exam-level questions. There are also two specimen exam papers and a complete set of answers to all questions at the back of the book. With the addition of materials on the CD-ROM it represents very good value for money.
