Slow to get going

While this book has an interesting premise and I definitely did not see the twist coming, I felt that it had a slow start. Katherine's life seemed to be a series of abortive relationships and her musings on America's colonisation. In fact, her little stories about what might have happened between various historical persons interested me more than her own life. I felt the book only really picked up around three quarters of the way through, when one of Katherine's boyfriends is murdered. After that, the pace was very quick, almost too quick. I really liked the ideas but I felt that they could have been better executed.

'Twenty three year old Katherine is hungry. But hers is no ordinary hunger.'
The book explores the portrayl of cannabalism in art and folklore and relates these tales the Katherine's life.
The tone is highly original, events are alluded to without being made explicit and it's full of dark humour (really dark!)
What I loved about this book was the total absence of any moral tone and the way the story was told in a way that was almost devoid of emotion. A real example of 'less is more.'
Highly recommended, especially to lovers of modern gothic and books such as Kate Stern's 'Down There By The Train.'

The heroine of this compelling dark comedy, Katherine Shea, is unlike any other character in Anglophone literature (or World literature, for that matter). Consider her the smart and strange god-child of Angela Carter and Paul Bowles--or Milan Kundera and Jane Bowles. Funnier and more intelligent than--but just as cunning as--Patricia Highsmith's Ripley, with her wry tone, her brilliant meditations on art and exploration, and her fast-paced, sexy, and intimate narration, Katherine will fascinate you--and at times she will frighten you.

This novel is a page-turner, and its engaging narrator tells her story with a sense of humor and the confidence to explore any taboo subject. Read it--quickly.
