I tried and failed...

OK, maybe I should have perservered for longer, I got to page 60 or so and couldn't fathom out what was going on...or why. If you like your books torturous and full of seemingly random prose, then maybe this is for you. This simply wasn't a book I could get into at all. Sorry.

he's done it again...

I was impressed by Bachelder's first novel, 'Bear V Shark', a searingly witty send-up of the banality of modern popular culture. He doesn't fail to deliver with 'U.S.!' either - although the form is similar to BvS (a bizarre melting-pot of prose, memos, interview transcripts, telephone calls, poems and songs, as well as internet reviews like this one) the end result is something even more poignant and intelligent.
Bachelder looks set to take over from Kurt Vonnegut as the American author whose can make us laugh ourselves silly at the baffling times we live in, at the same time as we weep with the utter mind-numbing stupidity of it all. Like Vonnegut, it's his touching understanding of humanity's flaws and foibles that keeps his acid tongue firmly in cheek.
