The Scottish writer G.F.Dutton is now 77 and for many of those years his spare and elegant poems have delighted me. This selection, from his three previous books and previously uncollected work, should be on any discerning reader's shelf -- clear-sighted, terse, musical, the poems let a scent of Zukofsky, of Williams, of Niedecker, of Creeley drift through perceptions that are patently not North American. A man whose interests embrace not only poetry, but horticulture, mountaineering, and long-distance swimming (and who has written brilliantly in each field), Dutton is a poet who deserves a far wider audience.
