Couldn't finish this book

I agree with the review by "Girl called G." The heroine, Lady Anne de Bohun, has it all: youth, beauty, and is even psychic! Every man who meets her falls in love with her, including King Edward IV, with whom she has an illegitimate son. Their wives are all jealous of her. All her servants are completely devoted to her because she is so sensitive and compassionate. She has exquisite taste in decor and fashion. So perfect in fact, that after the first few pages I was heartily sick of her.
I hadn't read the first book in the series, and this is the second. We find Anne living in Brugge with her baby son, where she decides to become a merchant trader. The guild of English traders do not allow her to join, as it is not their policy to allow women into the guild. But, as she is so beguiling and pretty, she charms the Duke into allowing her to join anyways. Because she is so much more clever than the other merchants (who have twice her age and trading experience), she becomes very successful and of course this means she makes some deadly enemies. When the love of her life, King Edward, pays a visit to Brugge, he sees her waving at his procession of barges, and so he arranges her kidnapping. He learns he has a son, and also learns that Anne has many enemies from whom she needs protecting. It's about here where I gave up. I had absolutely no desire to learn anything more about these one-dimensional characters. I was hoping she'd be killed off by one of the merchant traders, but no such luck, she's back in a third book. Romantic drivel.

Anne de Bohun is too perfect to be plausible. I didn't enjoy reading the endless descriptions of how clever she is, how she has outwitted all those around her, survived adversity but still remained stunning so that all those who see her either envy her or fall madly in love with her.
This isn't a book that paints characters as real people, but simplifies and romanticises them. It's not boring and makes for an easy read, but I found it irritating at times.

The bad thing about this book.. is you dont want to finish it, but you cant help yourself - a sign of a good book!
Annes story continues with her trials in Brugge after being exiled (by choice) from England by the King. Plots are made against her by namely jealous merchants, although the Queen might be involved. The whisper of Witch can also be heard.
I found the story enchanting. Historically Edward was said to be happily wed to Elizabeth; yet this story tells it differently - i do not know if there is any truth in this?
Even if there is not, the story will enchant you, with hope of such a love

At the end of The Innocent I was feeling a little disappointed. However, as I had bough the trilogy as a set I decided to plough on. How glad I am! The story really gets going in this book, MUCH better than the first book.
The story of the forbidden love between Edward and Anne really tears at the heartstrings. Some excellent descriptions of the ways of the times too. A truly addictive read!

This keeps the intrigue and interest alive in what has happened in all the characters' lives. Although the initial fire that there was between Anne and Edward has died down - because of the titular exile - you have more sense of the love between them. You really want this to work out, but at the back of your mind you know it is nigh on impossible. But this is all good for developing Anne's personality - she is no longer the innocent little girl who doesn't know what to do with herself.
The queen Elizabeth is given more definition as a character and this is significant. Also there are new characters to get used to - I particularly love the baby Edward who can't speak yet but is so charming anyway.
I enjoyed 'The Exiled' and it is good to know there is a third (and final) part of the story to come in 'The Beloved.'
