Useful and challenging

This book not only provides a clear and well-thought out description of literature and criticism since 1945 but also introduces some writers who are not yet canonical. The student and general reader are therefore offered better and more surprising avenues to explore than other books of this type. The style is friendly and unintimidating, and the organization is such that the reader can choose her own way through the various entries, making reading a pleasure.

A useful and comprehensive guide.

This lucid and wide-ranging survey would be invaluable for undergraduates desperate to flesh out an essay, or to have difficult points of theory clarified, those in other disciplines wanting deeper knowledge of the period, or simply an engaged non-academic reader who would enjoy placing modern literature in context.

Padley explores examples outside the run of the mill and his style is highly accessible, expanding knowledge of works already known and stimulating curiosity about those which are unfamiliar.

First, I need to hold my hands up here: my own work has a brief mention in this book. But bear with me, as that is *not* why I am recommending it.

Padley has provided us with a succinct, literate, warm and intelligent survey of literature and literary trends in this country from 1945-present. While not attempting any great intellectual or critical innovation - the series does not require nor want any such thing - this manages to be nonetheless a personal text rather than simply a text book. If you are a university literature student, buy it. If you are an 'A' level student in literature, buy it (and thus perhaps get more wear out of it). If you are a general reader interested in the period, buy it. A slim, sharp look at a period that usually manages to be both neglected and overexposed. Terrific.
