Great holiday read

I really enjoyed this book. I haven't read any of her other books, and will now do so, but I found it highly entertaining, well written, fast moving, great fun, completely ludicrous but who cares? Holiday reading at its best and indeed at any other time because it's guaranteed to result in a 'feel good' factor that is welcome at any time. My daughter of 15 enjoyed it just as much so it gets the teenage vote as well.

Good Natured Time Travel Fantasy

On the downside it is relentlessy dim witted on all levels (the author seems to believe for example that GPS devices would work in the past and that the Greenwich Meridian is something other than an completely arbitary delineator). It's also far more derivative than most reviewers seem to realise. It's amazing what additional praise you can garner be repackaging fantasy/sf stuff as standard literature to bring in a wider audience (good) and to avoid awkward comparisons with similar more accomplished works in the genre, a technique very much in vogue at the moment with publishers.

A Delightful Victorian Romp
Rating (5)
Date: 2007-06-17
It's an outrageous read - spicey, fresh and compellingly funny. Charlotte, as a poor-girl prostitute - as with all real fairy stories - makes good. Such is the sharpness of Jensen's pen, that one enters easily into the lumpen world of nineteenth century Copenhagen, and even the happy-ever-after ending does not cloy. So,if you are ready for some time-travel, want to be startled and amused, and are ready for something entirely original, then give it a go! I loved it.

a charming story

I loved this book. I picked it up because I liked the cover and I wasn't disappointed. The story is a strange and likeable and rather frothy one, about a Danish prostitute and her mother, who accidentally travel to twnety-first century London and where Charlotte, the heroine, meets and falls in love with a Scottish archaeologist. The plot hurtles along at break-neck speed and there is a wonderfully happy ending. The whole thing is a delightful and absurd concoction, a real feelgood story, full of love and naughtiness and perfect for reading on a hot summer's day. I will now seek out more of Liz Jensen's books!

After reading'Ark Baby' I couldn't wait to read another Liz Jensen but I have to say I was disappointed.Somehow I found Charlotte to be mildly irritating and I found myself skipping lots of it as it was quite predictable.I shall read more of Liz Jensen's books however, as she is a fascinating writer and hope I enjoy them more than this one.
