A first class book
Rating (5)
Date: 2008-11-24

This is a first class book for those who need an introduction to law but who do not necessarily want to become lawyers. The sections dealing with legal writing skills, legal method and how to approach legal essay questions are particularly welcome as many students new to law seem to find these difficult areas.

All students embarking upon the law section of their courses will find this book invaluable.

A 'Really Useful' Book

This is such a helpful book. It contains very practical advice for the new law student in a number of areas, covering 'skills based' topics such as essay writing and answering legal problem questions, as well as touching on some basic areas of English Legal System, without which such advice would be too general and not properly contextualised. The advice on common problems with written English is sadly all too necessary, but clear and robust, sensibly focusing on the most frequently encountered difficulties rather than attempting to be too comprehensive. The authors' gentle sense of humour is never far away and quietly contributes to the easy readability of the book.

I thought this book was absolutely terrible. For the readers it was aiming at it completely did not fulfill it's purpose. The book is written in an extremely complicated way, and adopts, what I felt was, a somewhat patronising tone. It's enough to put someone off from studying law. I would not recommend this. If you're after a good introduction for how to approach your study of the law, I would highly recommend you read: 'Letters to a Law Student-A guide to studying law at university' By Nicholas J. McBride. The approach to this one is a much more 'human' and less intimidating to would-be law students, who may already be feeling a little scared at the prospect of commencing on such a difficult degree.
