A comprehensive account of football related migrations
Rating (4)
Date: 2007-01-16

The authors, who are both renowned scholars, advocate a longitudinal, historical approach to understanding sport migrations and provide an explanation for the importance of history in making sense of migration patterns and migration related social phenomena. By doing so, they make an attempt to unfold the multifaceted nature of football related foreign sojourns by analysing region specific migratory sequences in the international context.

In so doing, the authors provide a thorough overview of the sport migration literature, together with making necessary references to the general migration sources. They, for instance, consider the regional and international significance of British, South American, Yugoslav and African migrants as well as the world-wide market and movement of coaches and managers and their impact on the development of national playing styles. The Bosman ruling, which was a milestone in the sequence of European sport migrations, is also meticulously investigated via introducing its instantaneous consequences and possible future repercussions. Thus this book can serve as an academic itinerary for both scholars and students who study football related migrations. In fact, I would suggest that this book could be a good initial point of reference for those who want to expand their knowledge in sport related migrations.
