Review of Nichter's Anthropology and International Health
Rating (4)
Date: 2004-02-11

The Nichter's book is an interesting insight into the recent history of health care as an aspect of development in South and South East Asia. To get a full understanding of their aproach to medical anthropology I would advise reading all four sections, for they vary in tone and extent of ethnographic reference. The last two sections are particularly grounded in descriptive ethnographic data while the first two rely more on statistics. I do think the rhetoric of modern medicine (especially in section two), and health development may have undermined/failed to recognize the power and potency of indigenous forms of healing. However, I found their book to be an accessable collection of culturally and historically informed essays that convey the importance of local awareness for the overall success of health programs.
