In an attempt to answer the question `How old is Cinderella?' Anderson introduces us to Red Riding Hood, The Pied Piper, Snow White, Aladdin and several other familiar fairy stories and folk-tales as well as taking us back to Homer, Lucian and Dionysius, to mention only a few. He concludes that though we think of fairly tales and folk-tales as post Renaissance, dating from the 17th and 19th centuries respectively, most have parallels or antecedents, if not roots, in antiquity. In some cases the links are clear and fairly indisputable; in others they are a matter for discussion, especially in cases where there is no obvious mediaeval link between the ancient classical and the modern.
Almost two-thirds of the book are devoted to a carefully detailed survey of ancient folk- and fairy tales and their resemblance to modern types, with a reminder that re-interpretation has always gone on and meaning and significance have always varied according to local culture, time and circumstance. A brief excursion into developments over the last forty years moves into the previously `forbidden territory' of psychology, sociology and anthropology, with examples of what feminist readings are now doing to stories like Cinderella and Red Riding Hood, before the final third offers four appendices, extensive notes, a bibliography and an index.
