Neither serious nor funny, don't waste your money!

I had read The Year of Yes by Maria Headley and the rather less literary Diaries of an Internet Lover prior to buying this, and found lots to enjoy in both those books. So I bought this on impulse and was unpleasantly surprised to find that it was hardly a genuine, real-life story of a single guy trying to find Miss Wright but a very self-indulgent and smug diary of a comedy performer who builds a show around the idea of trying to find a woman to marry within a year. His project seemed more a publicity stunt than anything else, and even if there was some genuine intention, the whole comedy show factor made it all about as close to ordinary life experience as your average episode of Big Brother. Add to that a self-regarding and actually not very funny author/protagonist - I couldn't take anymore after maybe five chapters or so. Unfortunately there weren't any reviews posted to warn me when I bought this book...

This tale has its moments, but they are few and far between. There's an awful lot of padding and a lot of repetition about the driving force behind the project, i.e. a show commissioned for the Edinburgh Fringe, a book deal, media interest in the quest etc etc. All a bit self-congratulatory. It lacks the lightness of touch of, say Dave Gorman's Googlewhack Adventure, which is also based on a somewhat random / artificial quest, but is a fun ride for all that, and shows real warmth and affection for the people he meets along the way.
For my money, a far funnier and more perceptive take on the random meetings thrown up by the world of dating is "I'm Celibate... Get Me Out of Here!" which looks at the search for a relationship for its own sake, and not as means to producing a comedy show.

Very funny. I watched the show in Edinburgh with my girlfriend and we both loved it. He complains throughout about the frustration of following through with his mission but his view of dating is increasingly warm and positive. I laughed loads and enjoyed the subtle twists that he so frankly experiences with what he is trying to achieve, which is to find his ideal partner.

Laugh out loud funny in places and pleasantly honest in others. Carey clearly had a hard time with this project but came out of it with many positive things to say. I have bought copies for all my single friends. What most impressed me is how far this man was willing to go to create a great date. Thoroughly good read.

I picked up Marry me on Saturday morning, and finished it by Sunday evening. What an enjoyable read, if fact many times it turned me into a bit of a nutter, as I found myself laughing out loud. The book is bascially about Mr Marx trying to find a wife, and his quest to try different ways to meet people. Carey Marx, described all his new freinds so well that I almost feel I've met them all and some I've become very fond of. I might invite them all to my next party in fact, I'll be gutted if they don't all come. In the days when I was single, we just had a thing called a telephone that was attached to the wall. Dating today sounds much more fun, exciting text messages and emails, I think if I was single in todays world I'd have stayed that way. Perhaps even had a virtual baby and eductated it by text message. Carey's book showed the highs and lows of dating, and the different ways someone could be romantic without just copying everyone else. This book is fun for both married and single people. Hysterical email exchanges, funny moments in which most of us could identify with, and real people.
