In 1987, Charles Atkins was diagnosed with cancer. As with many cancer patients he underwent chemo and radiation therapy, a process that kills cell growth (both cancerous and healthy cells). To say the least, it can be a horrible process.
Years earlier, Atkins had been introduced to the work of Buddhist master Nichiren Daishonin. These teachings focused on the Lotus Sutra, repetition of the words "Nam-myoho-renge-kyo". For Atkins, this became a mantra of healing, to release karmic blockages and reverse dis-ease within the body system.
With nothing to lose, Atkins used this mantra during his illness. Before and during each therapy session, he chanted the phrase. This made the experience tolerable. He also regularly practiced the mantra with imagery techniques to speed his recovery. Atkins now uses the method to help others.

This book is exactly what many people are seeking right now. Atkins teaches clearly how to use our own potential for healing. His personal experience and that of others he has taught are added to illustrate the truth in his message. Many patients feel that their ailment overshadows their individual value and humanity. They may feel like little more than an ambulatory medical chart in a clinical setting, as their physicians seek to treat the affliction on a purely scientific level. Alternative and complimentary medicine is a rapidly expanding field in the western World, gaining in momentum and acceptance by more average people all the time. Western medicine typically attributes causes of illness to physical realities while Eastern medicine considers life energy and the mind; the merging of these two diverse approaches is the future of medicine. Atkins believes that regardless of an individual's belief system, there are methods to incorporate meditation or prayer into treatment that actively involve and empower the patient in their own healing process. Modern science is beginning to accept the reciprocal influence the body and mind have on each other. This book can help anyone who wishes to assist in his or her own comfort and recovery from physical or psychological disease

Charles Atkins is currently helping a friend of mine who is suffering from a life threatening illness. She finds the book invaluable and uses the visualisation techniques as well as chanting each day. It is definately one of the best books you could ever buy, whether you are suffering from illness or know anyone else who is suffering. It is worth reading first before passing it along. Chanting is simple, you can do it anywhere and if you can't chant aloud then do it in your head. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. A wonderful lifeline of a book. Thank you Charles.

Finally, a book about Buddhism that offers practical application of its principals, especially in regard to healing illnesses. Charles Atkins gives understandable explanations of complex Buddhist theories that make sense. I have chanted the mantra in his book, Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, to finally rid myself of chronic asthma. The beauty of the book is that people of all faiths and beliefs can, without compromising these beliefs, benefit tremendously from using this mantra. I have recommended this book to all my friends and they have as well found it very useful in their lives. Great book!
