Amazon.co.uk Review
The sumptuously illustrated A Passion for Fruit is a collaboration between the photographer Mike Newton and the Italian food specialist Lorenza De'Medici, whose credentials include descent from the great Florentine family of bankers and art patrons. Fittingly, the photographs, concentrating on 36 individual fruits, are modelled on the still-lifes of the seventeenth century artist Giovanna Garzoni, painted for the Medici. The results are quite ravishing, evoking with careful composition and chiaroscuro the essence of the fruit. Lorenza De'Medici has provided a commentary and three recipes for each fruit, very much written, as she says, from an Italian perspective and therefore harmoniously complementing the pictures. The fruits are gathered neatly into four categories: Orchard Fruit, Soft Fruit, Mediterranean and Exotic Fruit. The commentaries are agreeable and informative; the recipes mostly simple, designed to bring out the essential qualities of the fruit. Some are unexpected, such as the extremely interesting "Squid with Mulberries". Others may invite a second reading--"Papaya Risotto", a dish that seems to hover between savoury and sweet, is finished by plunging an unopened bottle of champagne into its centre: the heat pops the cork and the wine gushes out over the rice and fruit. It's a pity, perhaps, that Lorenza De'Medici is too fastidious to cope with medlars, preferring to substitute loquats. But anyone who shares a passion for fruit will find this a delight, with much to amuse and instruct. --Robin Davidson
