Brilliant exposition, pathbreaking analysis

This is the best book published on a vital, pathbreaking subject-area. Astutely combining an extensive grasp of a wide field of empirical material with an insightful understanding of theoretical perspectives, this text advances an original theory accounting for the similarities and differences between varieties of cyberconflict.

The author explores a range of cases such as the movement against the Iraq war, Chinese cyber-dissidents and Israeli and Palestinian political hackers, to provide an overarching perspestive while also addressing issues specific to particular areas. One of its major strengths is the use of the categories of sociopolitical and ethnoreligious movements to justify the use of distinct theoretical approaches. The author combines social movement theory, media theory and conflict theory in a way which effectively demonstrates the need for all three approaches and which combines theoretical tools to good effect, not simply combining distinct approaches but weaving them into a coherent overarching framework.

The author's knowledge of the field is remarkable, her grasp of theory is exceptional and the text will stand out as one of the defining moments of an increasingly important field. Not only a must for cyberconflict specialists, the book is also of great use to anyone working on social movements more broadly, or looking at the impact of new technologies.

My only criticism is that the network aspect of the approach could have been taken further and incorporated more effectively with Deleuzian approaches to understanding social movements.
