Not a book for bread lovers

A thoroughly irritating book by an author who appparently knows next to nothing about bread.
At best, this is a dull travel book written by the worst sort of American traveller.
At worst, its badly researched, prejudiced and uninformative.

One to avoid.

This lady just loves bread and it comes across so wonderfully in this book. She makes places come to life in such a way that I could feel myself getting more and more hungry the more I read.

Her search for perfect bread has taken her all over the world although at times it seems that her obsession spills over to all things culinary. I enjoyed that she admits that she's not a chef, simply a lover of bread and that her love of the loaf goes hand in hand with her love of travelling.

While at times she is quite derogatory in her descriptions (she is particularly negative about her trip to Ireland, though more in relation to the weather than the bread) she gushes over most places and teh traditional bread making process. It's hardly surprising that she has no time for the store bought processed bread after tasting some of the best home made varieties that the world provides.

this book encourages lovers of travelling (me) and of eating (me again) to find thier own obsessions and look at the world in a different way.
