This book was a great introduction to Java, used in conjunction with BlueJ and the BlueJ labmanual. It doesn't tell you absolutely everything (you can find other help on the Sun webpages) but what it does do is explain all the concepts really well.
In depth, but poorly laid out

Big Java should definately NOT be brought if your just starting out in Java. While its covers many subjects in depth the book is badly written and difficult to read. Topics are covered in what can only be described as a nonsensical order, this is by no means a book you could easily go through chapter by chapter and learn Java. While its content is up-to-date it often over complicates simple subjects and examples are far to intimidating. After opening this book once I hardly ever used it again

I found this book very useful although quite difficult.
I have been combining it with my studies at the Longlife Learning University of Exeter. I think without my tutor's help it would have been rather complicated for me.
Again, good buy only if combined with courses, otherwise not of much use I think
Simplicity to Complexity; this book has it all

Starting with the most simple and essential knowledge, this book is ideal to lead any programmer with any background knowledge of programming into the world of Java. The first chapter is devoted to explaining the inside of a computer and how this relates to what you can achieve with it and then continues with the traditional and well known starting program "Hello, World!"
From this simplicity for the absolute beginner the book moves onto more complex programming and by the time you have finished it you will be able to perform very complex and intriguing programs to be run on any platform.
The great thing about this book is the way you are able to dive in and out of chapters as you feel necessary. Some people may have more knowledge of certain aspects than others, and the simple index system and chapter summaries allows you to decide whether or not you need to read a chapter or not. Even the most experienced programmers could use this book for reference alone as the syntax descriptions in the book are easily laid out for trouble and bug free programming.
I am currently starting an MSc in a computer related course and Java is an essential part of my studies. This book is proving and will prove a bible for me so that I can complete my studies with simplicity.
