Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Todd Lammle strikes gold again with a new edition of CCNA: Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide, which, in point of fact, isn't hugely different from earlier versions but nonetheless dominates its competitors. This is the best book on the market for bottom-up CCNA preparation, owing in equal part to Lammle's thorough coverage (the CCNA test covers many tiny details), his skill in explaining concepts in prose and illustrations and his care in designing exercises and practice questions. All the exam-prep elements are handled competently, as well, with annotations supplementing answer keys and plenty of comments about what Cisco expects its test-takers to say, as opposed to what may actually be true.

What's special about the Deluxe Edition? Its companion CD is somewhat better than before, since it now includes a browser-based tool that simulates a Cisco router's administrative interface (it can be hard to set up, though). The practice exam software on the CD is okay, though its questions are identical to those in the book. It would also be nice if the software kept track of your performance on exams over time, allowing you to identify and practice in subject areas of weakness. The book itself now features a larger and more detailed glossary, and a nice command reference. There's no need to upgrade if you have one of this book's predecessors, but count on a treat if this is the first Lammle CCNA book you buy. --David Wall

Topics covered: all of the material Cisco Systems says you have to understand in order to pass Exam 640-607 and earn its Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) professional rating, including the seven-layer network model, the essentials of Internet Protocol and its routing, the Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) and wide-area network (WAN) technologies.

Essential, but not complete at all

I sat my ICND training about 3 years ago but never got the chance to sit the CCNA exam due to a variety of work related nonsense. Recently I decided to get the certification, and thought the best way to find out what was in the new and improved CCNA exam was to buy this deluxe edition and work my way through the book. I bought it, worked through it twice and sat the exam. I failed.

Turns out that this book is not the comprehensive manual we might think it is. One of the 3 big router simulations I got in the exam was a lab to set up NAT translations between an ISP and a companies internal network. My world fell apart as I realised I had no idea how to do this, and the commmands or detail were never mentioned at any point in the book! I then got several questions in a row concerning the inner workings of the RIPv2 protocol, which the book tells me I dont need to know for this exam. Wrong! My next big simulation is debugging a multi-area OSPF setup, yet once again the book said multi-area isn't covered because it's not in the exam. I scored 709/1000 and the pass was 849/1000, and I was the highest first time scorer they'd seen in a year! Small comfort, I lost big on subjects the book said I did not need or didn't even mention.

I pinned a lot of hope on this book and I was let down. It is fine as far as it goes, clearly laid out and the guy does his best to get the ideas over and the information he gives is vital for learning the trade and for passing the exam. The big killer however is that the exam objectives and information that he gives are obviously lacking and flawed, and you CANNOT rely on this as a guide to what's going to come up in the exam. Be warned!

Good but crucial bits missed

The book is good for a good all round CCNA foundation. But Todd goes too far in detail into some things and not enough in to others. He also writes that RIP v2 is not in the CCNA exam so he will not cover it which is wrong as I have taken the exam and had questions on RIP v2. Also there is no detail on NAT only a brief overview in the book. This is also covered in the exam in detail

Not so much a guide as a necessity

All I'll say is that unless you have this book, you won't pass the CCNA exam. The delux edition also contains, flash cards, an exam sim & test questions to further cement the printed word. (You can also use the pdf version on the cd to study on the road.)

I promise you, it's essential !!!

Best study guide for CCNA

As the title states I truly believe this is the best study guide for the CCNA, I have used Video, web tutorials but neither have been as good as this book. I am a networking student doing the CCNA during summer as a little space filler and needed something that was easy, details and wont send you to sleep within 10 minutes.

Not only does it cover all the CCNA course very well with lab sessions and praticals you can do (everything supplied on disk), it also gives you mock exams and several supporting application even revision notes for your pocket pc for learning on the move.

Clear & concise - essential CCNA reading!

A very detailed book from cover-to-cover, covering all aspects of the CCNA course. Good examples, diagrams, and enough information to keep you interested, whilst not overwhelming. There is good coverage of general network terms, such as TCP/IP & binary, then progressing into specific CISCO & internetworking technologies.
The two CD's with programs & test exams included with this book, I have found invaluable, as questions in these exams are very similar to the actual CCNA exams. The practice labs help with a greater understanding of how everything fits together.

I find this a much more understandable book than others on the market, as it gradually works you into more difficult topics, rather than dropping you in at the deep end. Whilst prior network knowledge is reccomended, the introduction to networking helps even those with little experience. It is very readable, and good for those who want to teach themselves.

Only 4 stars, as this book is only 640 pages, rather than the 800-odd as advertised. However, it is a more up-to-date edition, and no faults with the actual content.

Essential reading for any CCNA wannabe!!
