a good read

Ororon was the first manga I ever read, so I admit I may be slightly biased. However I do think it is a brilliant manga. The characters are good, the art is good and the plot is good. The only slight problem I have is that it all ends too quickly.

I'm just starting to read a few manga, & trying to avoiding the throwaway teenage trash that pads out the manga shelves of most bookshops. I took a chance on the Demon Ororon based on the synopsis & previous Amazon reviews, but was bitterly disappointed.
This is published by Tokyopop, who churn out the kind of pap I'd been trying to avoid. Nevertheless I started reading with an open mind, but it was worse than I could have imagined, & after reading less than half of the first volume, I had to put it aside in disgust.
What could be an interesting subject is instead handled in a tedious string of cliches. A guy turns up at a girl's house & moves in permanently. He tells her that he's a demon & that she must be an angel. She takes his word for it. A couple of pages later they declare undying love for each other. None of this left me with any interest in finding out what happens next.
The artwork is generic & lifeless. The dialogue is lousy, & when any action occurs, it's so badly rendered that it's difficult to figure out what is supposed to have happened. The characters are one-dimensional, unbelievable, uninteresting and unlikeable (much like the plot), & there's not much to indicate their 'demonic' or 'angelic' qualities. Oronon is arrogant in a weak, predictable way, & the angel girl is just a pushover & devoid of any personality.
But the last straw for me was the spelling & punctuation, which is the WORST I have EVER seen or ever expected to see in a UK published book. Ostensibly the text has been handled by a Japanese translator, an English adaptor, an editor and a letterer, none of whom apparently knew the difference between "your" & "you're", "decent" & "descent" & various other mistakes. Misspellings & even typing errors have been transcribed into the handwritten dialogue (e.g. "another icon tahtkeeps people from having to deal with te sheer horro of existance"). This is astonishing. Even in the mass-produced trash manga market, I would expect to see some level of proof-reading & copy-editing.
It's actually quite depressing that something so badly written & edited can be allowed to be put on bookshop shelves for young people to read.
Don't buy this, or anything like this, or anything published by Tokyopop.

((possible spoiler warning: I will try and keep the spoilers to a minimum))I absolutly loved the Demon Ororon series. The art, the romance, the action, angels and demons, betrayal and a truely tragic love story, right up my street! I was hooked from volume one, but I was really dissapointed by the last volume, not because it ended tragically.... but because it ended TOO QUICKLY! Its like the last episode of Inuyasha... you spend so much time getting to know and love these characters and you want a proper ending for them. The ending was almost perfect, the last line left me in tears..... but there was no build up you knew exactly what was going to happen and so did everyone else, but she still dosen't really do anything!, and you just end up really unfufilled... after i was like. 'Why can't chiaki do the whole angel thing like she did for shiro?' 'What happened to lika/Othello and mitsume/ Shiro and the others?''Did Mitsume ever get a reason to live?''Is anyone even alive??????' 'What is the signifigance of God/Chiaki's powers?????' I was really confused, but i can't knock the series, Ororon 1 was perfect and 2 and 3, the art is great and the story captivating. Just a bit of a dissapointing end.

Ok, I admit the title for this review isn’t overtly creative, but mycreativity is presently snoring in its dormant state, so bear with mewhile I try to come up with a few good sentences to do this mangajustice...without rambling on. To be honest with you, I'm not really amanga person...much rather invest in my rapidly growing collection ofanime. Till now I've only enjoyed stuff like "Blade of the Immortal",(notthat I’m very partial to blood and gore, I just find there is somethingnostalgically poetic about that manga + brilliant art too) which I'd justborrow from my local library. Can’t think of much else other thanthat...very few of the stuff I've read recently, comes to mind now, coznon of them really sparked my interest, and most of them turned out to bea disappointing waste of money and time (like Juvenile Orion...boring orwhat!) So it was with much hesitation that I picked this up. I had no idea if I'dlike it or not, and was just itching to waste some money on a bit ofdistraction which didn’t involve taking up days to read, like a good novelwould do (I have exams coming up). And can u guess what happened? I fellin love! The art may not be your typical manga style, but it's got a charmin its self. I know I appreciate it, and I don’t care if some of thecharacters look like each other. What matters is the fact that they haveindividual and fully developed characters. You just end up loving Ororon-the guys this charming romantic with all the coldness of the devil comingthrough. so that when he attempts to say something affectionate, thepoetry which spews from his mouth is so dark and grim, you'd think its asick joke- but the guy utters it all with a straight face and seemsgenuine, so that while you were just about to laugh, you feel touched, anddrawn to this dude, who is so artfully created. The story is great: it’sdeep, its thought-provoking, it leaves u feeling sad...and still you getthe random laugh here and there. The way it deals with Western religion, might be offensive to some, but it didn't really bother me, although I'mactually quite religious and it had all the reason to. I think this is‘coz I just saw it as one big, thought-provoking, metaphor. ...and I've gone off on one just as I though I would. ok, will go now,but YOU WILL LOVE THIS MANGA! Especially those of you who are keen on"Angel Sanctuary"...yes I was interested in that for quite a while, and amstill really drawn to Kaori Yuki's art, but this is a lot better. It’smuch more...sophisticate...and errr...how would u say...well it hasnt gotyour crazy: "she's a reincarnation of her, he's a reincarnation of her,he's a reincarnation of that and a reincarnation of this, which makes himgood and evil but for all the good reasons coz he loves her, and she's toobusy loving his enemy, who loves her brother, who in turn loves his ownsister, and hates himself, so they all angst and agst and get nowhere!" :)And any way, for some reason the angsting in this seems a lot morejustified, and easily relatable to. ...oh dear I’m doing it again, thebane of the writer, is to go off on one I’m sure. Ok. Two words: GET THIS.
