THIS IS THE BEST READ EVER!!!! Seriously, i'm manga mad and this is great for girls because of the characters and both because of the storyline. I love the family dimensions in the story; how gojyo is like the big brother and v carnal, how hakkai is the mother and cares after every1. My 2 faves r Sanzo and Goku, the father and son in so many ways, how Sanzo is sooo gorgous and Goku so kai wai!!! You'll love the others 2, like kou and Ni jayni. Minekura has great art and amazing work and if you do buy it, try and get them all. Its Reload now, which is the series that continues from the Saiyuki series, and the characters have been deveopled amazingly. i can't praise this enough! If you enjoy you manga, you'll love this!!!

I have to agree with the other customer reviews on this one:
volume 1 is great - but just teaser, compared to the rest... Saiyuki is possibly the best manga i've ever read.
It's got everything;
stunning art,
amazing action,
delcious humour,
some of the bext character i have ever encountered in manga -
and a message.
What kind of message, i hear you ask? ^_^ Your gonna have to find that one out for yourself.
I urge you to read the rest of this series too!

This is the first volume of Kazuya Minekura's awesome SAIYUKI, although this volume itself is probably the worst. That's not to say it's bad: it introduces us to the unconventional group of pilgrims known as the Sanzo-ikkou, made up of Genjyo Sanzo, a smoking, drinking, murderous priest, Son Goku, a 500-year-old monkey god who acts like a hungry kid, Sha Gojyo, a lecherous kappa, and Cho Hakkai, the always-smiling converted youkai. It's probably the characters that will get you interested at this point, although their quest is also introduced: they are journeying west in order to prevent the revival of the demon Gyumaoh. However, if you're interested in SAIYUKI (and I really can't recommend this series highly enough) then my advice would be to buy 1 and 2 in one go. Although 1 is good, volume 2 is EXCELLENT and is, in my opinion, the start of the series itself. Volume 1 feels a bit more like an introduction. That saying, it has some great moments (deducting points from a youkai assassin for his every fault) and if you read this, it will get you started on something you really won't want to stop reading!

Volume 2 and one of the best

When I read this volume almost straight after reading volume 1, I could hardly believe that it was the same series! Although volume 1 is good, this one is EXCELLENT. Minekura's done her introductions and now gets on with the series proper. There are interesting storylines that allow us to find out about the pasts of two of the Ikkou members, and many emotional as well as humourous moments. The artwork also seems more comfortable and is much better (plenty of bishounen.) We also get our first proper introduction to the Kou-tachi and a very funny mini-story at the end. As far as I'm concerned, this is where SAIYUKI really starts. Highly recommended!

Volume 3 of Saiyuki

I would have bought this one for the front cover alone! However, this is also a really good volume. In this one we see Sanzo confronted with a figure from his past, and the Ikkou meet the Kou-tachi properly (we didn't really get to know them in volume 2). This brings to light a revelation that one of the Ikkou members is connected to one of the Kou-tachi. As well as this, there are cool fight scenes, loads of bishounen and the story's starting to get going. Recommended!
