Lovely artwork, shame about the story

This is a manga tale following Princess Ai. She first awakens on earth with no memory of her past besides her name. She has in her possession a heart-shaped box which she knows is important, she just isn't sure why. She has no money and no place to stay, she is abandoned in Tokyo.
She meets Kent and they discover a strong coneection between them. He helps her to look at illustrated books to try and jog her memory in the university library. There she finds a mysterious blank book apart from a faded picture of a family crest. She also finds a street singer who helps her to rekindle her passion for music and singing. It allows her to take a job in a strip club as a singer (not a stripper). Not everyone is happy about her new job however... Another problem is someone is following her trying to find her, someone in a war with her forgotten home-land.
I really liked the artwork and it was interesting finding all the references to Kurt Cobain, Nirvana, Hole and Courtney Love (who Ai is clearly based on). The problem was the story seemed overcomplicated and jumpy. Sometimes I felt like a page was missing when there wasn't as it jumped to a different setting with the same characters. I will read volume 2 though as it did pique my interest.

A little disappointed

I was really interested in the first two volumes, and I thought that the final volume would be very good. But it ended rather badly, things wasn't developed properly and there wasn't enough tension at the end, which is disappointing because the plot was pretty good. Actually, the plot is really really interesting.
The art...it's good, especially the coloured pages but it lacked something which I can't really explain. I guess I lost interest when I read this volume, but since it's the last one I had to buy it to complete the series.

Beautiful and stylish

As a fan of both Courtney Love and manga, I was very interested when I heard about Princess Ai and I was not disappointed when I rushed out to get my copy of the first volume when it was released. The beautiful artwork alone makes this series worth owning. Add to that the quirky tale of Ai, our mysterious winged heroine, her quest to uncover her hidden past and her sudden rise to fame as a rock goddess and there's loads to entertain you in these three slim volumes. It's certainly not serious literature and the plot may well be familier but that's not really the point. Stylish in the extreme, I would recommend this series to anyone who loves beautiful artwork and funky outfits!

A Great Manga from First Timers
Rating (4)

The manga is co-created by Courtney Love: from hearing that info you're most likely to feel a shiver down your back...and not in a good way.
It's the kind of manga you wish to hate, but it's not bad.
Sure it's not perfect; there are a few kinks in the story, such as the main character: Ai discovering her memories a little bit too rapidly to be believable. Plus, her name is Ai, and she's from Ai-Land...? If you started going around saying you were from (insert first name here)-Land, people would think you were on speed or something.
But the art work is beautifully done, Ai's costumes are to die for and music fans will see a few resemblances to Nirvana such as Ai's heart shaped box and her love interest: Kent looks very much like Courtney's late husband: Kurt Cobain.
There are a few humorous and unforgettable moments, lovely lyrics provided within the text and it's a respectable manga.
There are 3 volumes in total, and it's being made into a live action movie, so they must have done something right! The first volume may start of a small interest but by the 2nd volume I was very into it.
A great trilogy to add to your manga collection.

A beautiful girl awakes in the backstreets of tokyo with no idea who she is.. and the plot only gets better. The storyline is captivateing and the art is amazing. You can feel the personal touch Courtney Love has given her alter ego (inspired by her life-long love of manga). At times this book is cheesy, and the ending to the trilogy is a little dissapointing but these small faults aside Princess Ai is a fantastic book and more than worth a read.
