I approached this novel with some caution, knowing full well that it was translated text.
To my extreme relief, this book doesn't read like a translation at all and, although I have no idea whether important aspects of the original were lost in the translating, I certainly found it very enjoyable.
The novels follow the same basic plot as the Slayers anime and manga, although the details in all three vary considerably.
This means that these novels (written in first-person from Lina's perspective) bring a new aspect to Slayers (or an old aspect, considering that the novels were the precursor) and skilfully avoid being a blow-by-blow account of the anime.
A thoroughly enjoyable read for any Slayers fan.
