Utterly convincing - and totally gripping
Rating (5)
Date: 2007-07-22
This is a gripping, powerfully-written thriller in which Shehana, a Bangladeshi Londoner with problems of her own, discovers a dying prostitute on her estate. Having promised to contact the girl's brother, she then becomes embroiled in a sinister world of heroin and secrets, whilst struggling to keep her family duties. Her older brother clearly thinks it's time she got married, and Shehana has already lied to her parents about her university application.
The strength of this novel lies in the utterly convincing character voices - not only Shehana herself (whose conversations with her friend Fozia are so authentic you can hear them in your head) but also Aleks, the murdered prostitute's brother, who can't understand why Shehana isn't honest with her family. An exciting and taut read, exploring the expectations imposed by different cultures.
