The Starting Science Series is a brilliant series of books that is beginning to be lost from schools. If you are buying it for children to use at home this is an excellent reason for getting it to use there as they won't be using it at school. If you are a teacher buying it for their use, it is also a good reason as soon there won't be many around in schools to use and look at and they are definately worth having around to get ideas and diagrams etc. Starting science covers the whole of KS3 Science, although a dated curriculum. Each page has a couple of paragraphs of writing and a number of pictures/diagrams. At the bottom is a bulletpoint fact and a number of questions. These questions are differentiated so that the lower ability can find the answers in the texts and then the higher ability can use their noggins to work out some of the answers. The last question is always a "find out" question which is good for homework or independent study. As a teacher, I would say that It would be good for children to use at home if they are interested enough but are a godsend to teachers for ideas, questions and diagrams.
