End of the road for the Rainbow lads
Rating (4)
Date: 2008-02-26
This is the third and final chapter in the fantastic Rainbow series.
This series of books could happily have ended with Rainbow High, but Rainbow Road continues the story as the boys plan a final roadtrip before seperating for college and beyond!
The road trip is funny, exciting, touching and scary in equal measures as the three friends encounter different groups, new experiences and individual challenges.
Although the ending is a little rushed and some of the content unlikely (transexuals sitting in petrol filling stations waiting to go to a Britney lool-alike contest) for the most part the book takes Nelson, Kyle and Jason to the 'next stage' and leaves the reader certain that each will have a happy ending.
You won't be disappointed with this book or the two prequels. My only suggestion, order all three at once and then block out a weekend for solid reading as you'll soon become wrapped up these carefully written and wonderful characterised books!

Like Ian, who has written the previous review, I also read and produced reviews for Sanchez' Rainbow novels.
I was aware that originally there were only meant to be two books, and so was understandably curious to see how the third would turn out. Originally I was worried that there would be a "tacked on" feel to it, but the slower format mentioned by Ian helped us to focus on the relationship of the three gay teenagers in microcosm.
Sanchez' solution to "third book syndrome" is to have fun, which is an admirable choice to make, and one which is sadly a rarity in novelists. He uses spare material from the first two novels concerning difficult matters such as homophobic bullying and evangelical Christianity, and ties them into resolutions and actions made by his characters. This may sound pretty stock-in-trade, but he manages to carry out this task with such a lightness of touch as to create a feeling of real fulfillment for the reader. The only minor criticism I had was the resolution of Nelson's boyfriend situation, which sounded slightly rushed and artificial towards the end of the book. However, this is a very minor point bearing in mind the strength of the novel as a whole.
Ultimately this book is incredibly important for LGBT people of whatever persuasion, and particularly younger readers, as many narratives concentrate solely on the process of gaining partners, rather than the much more tricky task of actually keeping them and maintaining a healthy and loving relationship. The conclusion, which I will leave other readers to discover, is suffifiently satisfying to leave a smile on your face, but leaves the imagination refreshingly open for future adventures!
All in all, this is the best book of it's genre I have read since the turn of this century.

This book was purchased on reliance of the second book Rainbow High, that I have reviewed on here. Although not so much a criticism, I immediately noticed after the first few chapters that this offering is much slower in pace - arguably this may be because less is now going on than in the second book. Again we are re-introduced to Jason, Kyle and Nelson in what is going to be their summer roadtrip adventure. The story almost in its entirety is that of them travelling on the road to Los Angeles where Jason, who at the end of Rainbow High came out to the whole school and on network tv, is due to give a talk at a new gay friendly school. Could being together day in day out driving a car on a several thousand mile journey cause cracks in Jason's and Kyle's relationship? would they even be able to remain sane being in Nelson's company for that long? As we accompany them upon their journey the boys meet new characters and get themselves into situations involving many of which include people who lead alternative lifestyles. However all of their new encounters are not welcome ones! This end to the series seeks to leave us with the feeling that the characters have 'come good' and they have all reached the next stage of their lives - whether that is together you will just have to read to find out!
