Haunting and thought capturing
Rating (5)

This sequel to Raiders Tide is just as beautiful and haunting as the first novel. I keep reading both books over and over again. The historical context of it and the settings are thought capturing. The enduring love of Beatrice for Robert and her struggle to love John is sweet and openly shouts from the roof tops that Maggie Prince knew what she was doing with this novel. The characters are diverse and the storyline stretched to its full potential.

All i can hope now is that there will be a third part to this story.

This book keeps sticking with me. I can't get it out of my mind. It's beautiful. Truly beautiful novel. I believe it's not as slow as the first book. First book contains the romance of Beatie & Robert whereas this is more fast-paced as Beatie rushes to find a way to save Robert from being hanged. It's definitely more of a page-turner. Her growing romance with John is beautiful and the reader can distinctively tell their love is different to the one in which she shares with Robert. I wish there had been more encounters with Robert. I think he's wonderful.

Puts you into the place as Beatie due to the use of present tense and amazing description. The images come alive in your mind as if you were watching a film.

Bit disappointing is the ending. I found it quite confusing.

These books are well worth ther read! I got the book when I was with my friends and accidently bought the 2nd book, but it looked so good I had to get the first. The story line is intense, exciting and keeps you on your toes, you soon grow to love the characters and you understand how difficult it must be for Beatrice. It continues on from the 1st book and keeps you interested. The description of the surroundings is well written, and I am hoping a sequel is on the way!

A fantastic follow-up!

Having thoroughly enjoyed Maggie Prince's 'Raiders Tide' this is a worthy follow-up.

Both titles are set in Cumbria and Lancashire during the reign of Elizabeth I. We follow the fortunes of the Garth family - particularly daughter Beatrice. At the end of 'Raider's Tide' she had helped Robert, a young Scot and her family's enemy, to escape, and we left her contemplating her future. Should she marry her cousin Hugh or was there more to her relationship with Parson John than she had thought?

In 'North Side of the Tree' Beatrice is once again forced to make tough decisions, no more so than when she discovers that Robert never made it to safety, and is imprisoned in Lancaster Castle. Can she find a way to free him before he is hanged? And if she does so how will this affect her relationship with John and the safety of her family?

Both books are beautifully written, giving a really vivid picture of life in a specific place and time. However we are also given a plot which is both interesting and exciting, and characters that we really do care about. I for one hope that there might be a third book about Beatrice - the end of 'North Side of the Tree' certainly makes this a possibility!
