Elegantly written in a deceptively simple style, you are drawn completely into a world offering up wonderful characters in a vivid sense of period and setting. Eric Pringle has been called "the new Roald Dahl of the Millenium". BIG GEORGE AND THE SEVENTH KNIGHT proves he is better than that! Eric Pringle offers up something which is rare and valuable for "children of all ages", namely, A SENSE OF WONDER. Big George himself, an alien being to whom 900 years is a single day, and who sleeps for 200 at a stroke is a marvellous creation. George, trying understand himself, recall his identity in fragmented dreams tied to music, is a wonderfully HOPEFUL and empathetic creation. A representation of our own mythological yearnings. He is a hapless, innocent giant who has the ability to "sense" emotion in his new friends. Eric Pringle uses George's thoughts wonderfully to give us insights into our own human natures. At one point, George thinks, "These midgets are very changeable...but I suppose it makes life interesting"! I had to prise BIG GEORGE AND THE SEVENTH KNIGHT away from the clutches of a 22 year old British soldier home on leave! He loved the book and read it in two sittings. A beautifully written fairy tale, vivid, very, very funny, inventive, full of colour and humanity, the book gets into your bloodstream. It'd make a great movie. Let us hope we don't have to wait 200 years for BIG GEORGE 3 is the verdict in this house. Eric Pringle gives children of all ages comfort in the possibility that somewhere out there BIG GEORGE actually is sleeping somewhere, (like the Golem in Prague), and will wake up one day to throw up a mirror to our follies and laughter. A lovely creation. Highly recommended. Twelve volumes of this, please!
