I read this book for a children's book of the year competition and probably wouldn't have decided to read it out of my own free will. As I picked it up and started reading it I hadn't read the blurb on the back because I belive that that spoils the book. It became aparant to me straight away that this was set in the past and at the time of the slave trade. I tend to go for teenage fantasy books such as Northern Lights but I loved the way that the book was written in an informal fashion and how it analysed the slave trade from many different angles. I had read a book that was set out like this before and loathed it but as I read further into the depths of this wonderfull piece of writing I got attatched to the characters, their feelings and essentialy the way that they each hated each other. I also love the way that the slave trade was viewed through different members in society ie a rich merchant's daughter, a poor scotsman, a rich slave trader and a slave. What's more to put the icing on the cake I was halfway through a history project on the slave trade!! A beautifully written novel, be sure to read it right to the end!...
