I liked this book. The story was very different (although still along the theme of planetary destruction and children saving the world from The Doomspell trilogy), and full of strange ideas that came through well.
My only problem was Thomas. I don't know whether it was me, or me being unable to totally comprehend his situation, but half the time I just couldn't empathise with him. Thomas is the character who's view point you see it from by the way. He seems to get unreasonably angry or emotional at times when I was thinking 'Whats the problem?'
Thats the reason why I gave the book 4 instead of 5.
Other than that, its a good book. The sequels are better I think

I thought this book was pretty remarkable. I'm an adult, and expected more of the Doomspell wizard/witch/magic stuff, so what a surprise. Mo magic, but the gifts these kids have got is just as weird and wonderful as magic. This is an amazing book, a completely original plot with some of the most intriguing characters I've ever come across. I can't believe how much I fell in love with those strange insect-like twins. The darker side of it - the way there's conflict between the kids, means you read it on edge some of the time, but by the end you realise that the conflict felt true, real. It's all so amazingly crazy and yet you beleive every word! Roll on book 2!

Almost like more of an introduction to a story than one in its own right I was amazed by how much I enjoyed this book! The blend of fantasy and normality makes an incredible mixture in all of Cliff's novels and this is no exception! The book is about a group of children who are all summoned to the same place. They leave happy family homes and run to a dangerous wasteland, Coldharbour. The reason for this only becomes clear at the end of the story, and even then all is not explained. If you enjoy gripping fantasy then I would recommend this to you! Although the book can be disturbing and you feel as though it should be longer no one should let this put them off! It is incredibly well written and the story line will keep you wanting more until the end and beyond! Definitely worth reading!

What a fantastic book! When I finished reading The Doomspell trilogy, (also written by Cliff McNish), I didn't know where to look. Finally, he produced another spectacular book which was equally as hard to put down. The great thing is, I'm 15, and I've never really been in to reading, but when Cliff McNish began to write, he changed my mind. I am now an aved reader of his books. I know that many adults enjoy reading his books as well. So if you have children who aren't really in to reading but you think they should be - Buy the Doomspell Trilogy! Then move on to the Silver Child - (This is also in a series of books). I do suggest that you read the books in the order they were written however, because otherwise they could get fairly confusing. Any way, back to The Silver Child! This book is a fantastic fantasy and adventure story, which is described so realistically, you can almost believe it really happened - which makes the reading so much more interesting! The characters roles are described so thoroughly, you really do get to think you know them! If there was a '100 star rating' for this book, it would be given by all readers! A MUST read for anyone, no matter whether you like reading or not! - Once again - BRILLIANT!!!

The silver child is one of the best books I have read. It is written by the same author of the Doomspell trilogy. six children are drawn to Coldharbour a desolate waste land of rubbish tips and muck. Thomas has a gift, a beauty to heal and and help people with happiness. Emily and Freda, who are twins, skuttle along the ground arms and legsout side was with a keen sence of smell. Walter, the gentle giant, who's about 12 feet tall looks after Thomas, Emily, Freda and Helen who can read minds and is "in tune" with insects. Finally Milo who first goes bald, then his skin comes of without pain leaving brilliant gold all around him, then his last skin colour of silver. He grows to be huge: he is a guardian with great wings to protect children from the roar thats coming to earth. There are going to be more books in the sequence and i cant wait. I would recomend this book - and the doomspell trilogy- to any one with a good imagination and a love for fantsy. Its definetly a worth while read.
