Really Great

I worked as a librarian in a past life and one day going in for my coffee break I picked up a random book and read the first paragraph...this is one of those hard to find books where you're immediately interested (this is not to run down the books where a bit of perseverance pays off) it's fun, and I remember describing it to someone as having the maximum amount of action and excitement that could be crammed in. Even though it's a children's book, I recommended it many times to adults and each of them was delighted with it. That was quite a long time ago now and I can't remember the story but I'm definitely going to get it for our 5 children and read it again.

The very best frog you are likely to encounter

The "Hounds of the Morrigan" is one of my favourite books ever. I discovered it quite by accident years and years ago in the library. One of the best things that ever happened to me! I have bought several copies since, but somehow when I lend them out, people don't want to give them back. That is the best sign I know of a truly marvellous book...
This is ostensibly a children's fantasy adventure story, but really it is much more than that. It is the most perfect storybook ever written, chock full of scary moments, thrilling adventure, a wonderful hero and heroine (Pidge and his little sister Brigit), interesting and entertaining supporting characters (especially the not-too-bright frog Pudeneen Whelan and crafty Coo Roo the fox), terrifying villains, ... I could go on and on. It is better than Harry Potter, more entertaining than Diana Wynne Jones, scarier than Alan Garner. Really, I'm not exaggerating. A fantastic book. And as fun and entertaining for a thirty year old as for an eleven year old. Read it. Or you'll be missing something very special!

I bought this book in a charity shop ten years ago and have read it on an annual basis ever since. Pidge and his sister are personable heroes and the Morrigan and her sisters, entertaining villains.
Having worn the original copy out, I'm replacing it for many more years of re-reading; hence the review.
I've been told I will read anything but there are some books that have that extra something that I keep coming back to - and this is one of them. A lively tale filled with entrancing and ever shifting shades of grey.
