Couldn't put it down - vital context for understanding the world

I couldn't put this book down. It gives the context that I wish TV news would include - the tightrope that Yasser Arafat felt he had to walk in Palestine, the real danger of being `embedded' with the military in Iraq, the patient manoeuvring to get people such as Prince Charles to appear on camera. I was surprised at how creative Hewitt and his team had to be to get their stories - for example bluffing their way into Ground Zero after 9/11.

The book is at least as good as John Simpson's autobiographical volumes, and is written in the sincere and straightforward way Hewitt talks on TV - so should be enjoyed by readers who were irritated by Simpson's personality.

Many of the episodes in the book hint at the moral dilemmas faced by news teams, such as how involved they should get in famine and war, and the devices they use to get their stories, but Hewitt does not go into much detail about his personal views. I hope Hewitt will consider a second book enlarging on his theme of a soul on ice.
