The book is a series of memoirs or recollections. Their unifying theme is the observing eye and keen ear of Paul Bailey. His realisation from the age of eight that he had a brain that was thirsty for knowledge and education, leads him to challenge the ignorance and fear of knowledge at home in working-class Battersea in the 1940's and early '50's. Never less than compellingly honest, and beautifully and sparingly written, gentle humour and high intelligence abound. 'Immaculate Mistake' is a joy.
