No matter how interesting, I can rarely get through a history book in less than a week. This book broke my record: I was glued to the pages for 3 days until I'd read it from cover to cover. Written in a flowing style, this book manages to present a historical account of the final years of Elizabeth's reign almost as though it were a piece of fiction. Roughly speaking it deals with the period of the Defeat of the Spanish Armada in the 1580's until Elizabeth's death in 1603 - the years which the author dubs "The Age of Triumph". Battles, conspiracies, rebellions, Court scandals ... they're all there packed in the easily-digestible 195 pages. It was only after having bought the book that I became aware that this was the fourth and last volume in the series. Still, it made an excellent read in its own right, and made no assumption that readers would have to have read any of the three preceding books in order to enjoy the fourth. Highly recommended!
