This is a very readable account of Jane Austen's novels, concentrating on Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma. Jenkyns is a Classics professor, and brings an unusual perspective to bear on the subject, in that he is an academic but here is writing as an enthusiast (and as a distant relative of Jane Austen's to boot!). Consequently, the book is perceptive and has a real sense of critical rigour, but there's something quite old-fashioned about its distance from academic criticism of Jane Austen, and it feels essentially like the informed musings of someone who has read Austen very closely over many years, rather than a treatise or a scholarly monograph. The result is refreshingly straightforward, and for someone looking for a lucid and unpretentious account of what makes Austen a great and indeed very innovative writer this is highly recommended.
