Fabulous blend of amazing photographs and top-flight fiction

I bought '13' after being so impressed with 'Baby Oil & Ice' from the same imprint. Although on the face of it not so lavish - black and white instead of colour pictures, more moods, more shades - '13' is a fabulous book revealing aspects of the feminine character through word and image I never thought existed. The pictures are interspersed with 'illustrations' from 13 high profile writers - including Julian Rathbone, Stella Duffy, Bill Drummond, Miles Gibson and Nicholas Royle - and the combination works a treat. Some, like Bill Drummond's wonderful revue of the nude and Miles Gibson's short but telling piece, take a non-fiction route; Mick Farren opted for a poem (surprisingly good), but most wrote short fiction. My favourite was James Sallis's languid love story, with Nicholas Royle's West London romp not far behind. A couple of the stories were naff, but the quality of the rest made you forgive Atkins instantly. His photographs, making full use of light, shade and atmosphere, take some beating. One of the best nude photographic books I have encountered - and it comes with 13 free stories! What a deal!
